FOUNDATION ANDÍGENA: WHO WE ARE
AndígenA is a Venezuelan non-profit foundation whose mission is the conservation of the Neotropical Biodiversity, with emphasis on the Andean Region.
AndígenA means "born in the Andes" and it reflects the origin of this organization: an initiative of a group of young professionals and naturalists concerned by the lack of effective conservation actions in the Andean Region of Venezuela. | Andean Highlands, Mérida State, Venezuela.

AndígenA is also the genus that identifies a group of beautiful blue toucans that live in the cloud forests to the north of The Andes, and whose image, transformed into a "modern petroglyph", is our institutional logo.
AndígenA works under the philosophy of respect for native cultures, while in search of viable solutions to the current problems of nature conservation. In order to achieve this, we are carrying out a series of projects on basic and applied biological research, analyses of economic alternatives, and the implementation of environmental education programs, based mainly on community participation.
Our Main Lines of Action
- Project Andean Bear: emblematic project of the

Simultaneously, we work on building environmental awareness among the local inhabitants, to prevent the extinction of this unique South American species.
- Project Tapir: based on promoting the study and conservation of Venezuelan tapirs (locally known as "dantas"). This project has been carried out with the valuable support from the Tapir Preservation Fund, Houston Zoo, SSC/IUCN Tapir Specialist Group, Ministry of Environment and the Chorros de Milla Zoo (Mérida, Venezuela).
- Project Atelopus: consists of fieldwork along the Andean Mountain Range of Venezuela, with the purpose of elucidating the current conservation status of the different species of toads of the genus Atelopus, one of the groups of amphibians most threatened at global level.
- Program Associate Researchers: this program offers an opportunity to independent researchers, or researchers from other similar organizations, of receiving the institutional support of the Foundation AndígenA to carry out research in accord with our lines of action in environmental conservation.
Furthermore these projects and programs, we are carrying out a series of initiatives focused on Torrent Duck Conservation, Herpetology and Ecotourism.
